You Can Beat the Dealer at Blackjack

There are no surefire ways to beat the game of Blackjack on each and every hand. If tips like these existed, Sin City would be out of business in a matter of months. There are, however, a few strategies that can be used to better your chances of going home the winner of the hand.

The first problem the player often has is the need to hit 21 on every hand. This is not the games focus. The game of blackjack will be more profitable to the player if they focus on beating the dealer rather than the odds. The elusive 21 is a great gift from the card Gods, but the dealers hand should be the primary focus.

Now that you are convinced to beat the dealer, the rules of the game can come into play. The dealer will hit on his or her hand if they are showing a 6 or lower as the up card. So, no matter what the bottom card may be, the dealer will have to hit on what is called a soft 17.

If the dealer has a ten or a face card as the bottom card, and the up card is a four, five or six there is a greater chance that the dealer will bust the hand. This is because any card at or above a 7 will cause the bust. Taking all 52 cards into account, the dealer has a 45% chance of drawing a card that will not cause the bust and a 30% chance that the draw card will not be played at all.

If the dealer is showing a 7, 8, 9, 10 or a face card you will instantly know what the face down card value is. If the dealer takes a card the value must be 7 or below. If the dealer does not take a card, he has a hard 17 and you will need to fight or fold. If your hand values a 15 or higher, you must take the loss. If you have is valued at a 14 or lower, hit the hand and hope for a card to beat the dealer.

The dealer may, from time to time, show a 2 or 3 the rules of the game require the dealer to take at least one card. This hand gives the dealer a better chance of hitting a hand from 18 to 21. The chances of the dealer busting or taking a second card are less than 30%. Again, you are in a position with this dealer hand to hit on a 15 or lower.

The only sure way to win at the game of Blackjack is to quit while you are ahead. The cards may run hot for a few hands and you can pocket some winnings. But, rest assured, the house always wins and walking away with that profit makes you the end winner of the round.

Sitting at a table feeling greedy for more money will be the downfall of your hand. There is nothing worse than winning a few hands and then falling off the map. Blackjack is a game of odds and simple math, keeping it simple is a great way to beat the game.

Advertising has been the backbone of the business world since the Egyptian times and possibly even earlier than that. The Egyptians would use papyrus to advertise different political campaigns and there have been advertisements found on the walls of the ruins of Pompeii and ancient Arabia. So, advertising is not an invention of the 20th century but a mere tactic that was developed centuries ago. Advertising is a multi-billion dollar effort to help business owners get their message out about their products and services to consumers locally, nationwide or worldwide.

If it weren’t for advertising, the business world would not be as successful as it is each and every day. Advertisers place ads in hundreds of different places for consumers to see. Ads appear most commonly on television, radio, previews before movies, in magazines, on the sides of buses, on billboards, on business’ vehicles and in the daily newspaper. Advertising is an expensive, yet rewarding venture for a business owner. The most popular day of advertising in the United States is the Super Bowl each year. This is when companies release brand new television commercials that air during the most watched football game of the season. They do pay a pretty penny for the ad time though. Advertising spending will surpass 500 billion dollars worldwide by the year 2010 and will continue to increase as long as the public continues to consume goods. Advertising has gone through different modes of conveying a business owner’s message through the years. Advertising has developed from simple billboard pictures to elaborate television and radio spots that include special effects, famous actors, announcers and other important public figures. Nowadays athletes and actors have become focal points of advertising. These figures are paid a stipulated amount of money to sponsor someone’s product. The most recent example is Derek Jeter and Gatorade’s product G2.

Advertising, like the title says, is the backbone of business. If business owners and major corporations did not use any means of advertising then their product’s information would never reach the public and it wouldn’t sell on the market. This would more than likely put them out of business. If businesses wish to be successful in selling products and goods they must delve into the advertising world to reach their clientele.

There are two ways for advertisers to determine how to market a product on television or on radio. For television, advertisers look at the Nielson Ratings each quarter to see how many people across the country tuned in to a specific station or show. For radio, advertisers look at the Arbitron Ratings to see how many people tuned into a specific time slot or radio station. Both of these forms of ratings measurements are not 100 percent effective though and some times have to be taken with a grain of salt. The ratings systems are based off of a handful of people that record in a booklet what they have watched on television or listened to on the radio and then it is calculated for the remainder of the country.

Advertising is the backbone of business and without advertising the retail market would not be as successful as it is today.

Book Review: Stories of a Recovering Fundamentalist – Understanding and Responding to Christian Absolutism by James C. Alexander

I have to admit that I was a little leery about this book, as a result it sat on the bottom of my pile. Problem was, eventually the pile dwindled, and only Stories Of A Recovering Fundamentalist remained. I was worried, having just moved into the very apex of the Bible Belt, I am sure that mere possession of a book with a title like this contravenes some arcane local by-law. It was with grim determination that I gritted my teeth, and launched into it!

Author James Alexander is a fascinating guy, an ordained minister, a PhD, and a thoroughly entertaining and educated writer. At under 200 pages this is not the weighty tome designed to replace sleeping pills, but a lively discussion that covers a huge spectrum concerning religion today, its roots, and maybe most interestingly the cause and effect on society, politics, education, and just about every other facet of life.

The problem with Fundamentalism James Alexander explains is the intransigence with which it is applied. To blindly obey and not to question makes no sense. Critical thinking is a hugely important part of human existence, yet Fundamentalism leaves no space for such ideas. What is written in the bible, or the Koran, is to be taken at face value, more importantly it is not to be questioned. When an interpretation is required it will be supplied by the ‘Adults’ of the church, the mere believer, only needs only to believe, not to think. Maybe this is the major reason that my trips to church only revolve around Births, Marriages, and (as I get older), an increasing number of deaths.

I suspect that James Alexander and I have quite a lot in common. I do not seek the truth, I seek the wisdom to make my own decision as to what that truth might be. I will not be bullied in this process.

James readily admits that when the going gets tough, even he has the urge to retreat into the safe cocoon that fundamental teachings offer. It is so much easier to take the well trodden path, than hack your way through the jungle. But it is that hacking process that offers the learning process, don’t be confused with this sentiment, this is not re-inventing the wheel. This is discovering the wheel that suits you best.

This is not your regular dry and insipid look at religion, this is new and fun. Early on in the book James talks a little about his life as a child. It was not the happiest of situations, but he found solace in the local children’s Bible club. It was the leader of this group that started to take James to church. As he describes it, the Bible Club Lady started taking him to church, but he could not understand why it was always the same church. Each time they traveled they passed by several other churches. In what has to one of the funniest dialogs I have read in a while, James asks her “What about THAT Church?” The answer apparently was always the same.

No. Not that one. They baptize babies.

No. That one doesn’t use the King James Bible.

That one? Not a chance! They speak in tongues.

That place!!! You must be kidding! Why, Jimmy, that’s a Catholic Church! They pray to statues, and the pope is the Antichrist. Don’t ever go in one of those churches!

You just have to love such dialog!

One of the concepts that the author establishes early on,is Logos and Mythos. Hardly new concepts, but ones that are often misunderstood, or not understood at all. In layman’s terms, logic and mythology. Both have a valid place in religion, and both have the same standing when it comes to belief. Both offer opportunities to be right, it is a question of how you use this information.

Alexander introduces a term that I had not heard before ‘The Flat Bible’. In a nutshell treating the Bible as flat, means giving the same level of importance to every section. This lends to many seeming contradictions in teaching. However if you treat the Bible as having hills and valleys a much more balanced text is revealed. In support of this notion the author includes an essay that he wrote some years ago, if you read nothing more than this essay out of the book you will gain much understanding.

Christian fundamentalism has been around as long as Christianity itself, however the modern version has its roots in the 1920’s and specifically the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial, which pitted creationists against evolutionists. The light bulb flickered on again briefly in the 70’s, and now in the first decade of this century it is burning brightly. The movement has found a willing and able ally in segments of the government. As James Alexander points out, G. W. Bush’s approval ratings are at an all time low, and who are those that are sticking so doggedly to him? The Christian Right, during his time in office he has done much to further their agenda.

There are so many facets to Stories Of A Recovering Fundamentalist that I could indeed write a book about the book! Oops, looking at the length of this review, I just have!

Relationships: Empathy Vs. Responsibility For Feelings

William grew up with a mother who was depressed much of her life. As the oldest of three children with a father who was not around much, William took on a lot of responsibility for his mother’s wellbeing. He grew up as a kind and caring man, believing that he was responsible for another’s feelings, especially a woman’s.

Lauren grew up in a family where she received constant criticism from her father. From the time she was little, she had learned to try to do everything right in order to have control over getting her father’s approval and avoiding his disapproval. Lauren learned early in life to make others responsible for her feelings.

As so often happens, William and Lauren got together at their common level of woundedness, with William feeling responsible for Lauren’s feelings and Lauren making William responsible for her feelings. But it didn’t take long for William to feel engulfed by Lauren’s demands and to shut down as a way to protect himself from being controlled by her. The more William shut down, the angrier and more demanding Lauren got, and the angrier Lauren got, the more William shut down. Both felt deeply lonely in the relationship, each reacting to the other’s wounded self.

As long as William believed he was responsible for Lauren’s feelings, he was unable to feel any of his natural caring and empathy for her. And as long as Lauren believed that William was responsible for her feelings, she was unable to feel any of her natural kindness toward him.

The fact is that we cannot feel both empathy toward another and responsibility for their feelings at the same time. We cannot feel empathy for another when we feel burdened by responsibility for their feelings, or when we believe that the other is responsible for our feelings. As long as William continued to believe that he was responsible for Lauren’s feelings, all he knew to do was shut down. As long as Lauren believed that William was responsible for her feelings, all she knew to do was get angry and blaming.

Fortunately, William and Lauren were willing to learn and practice Inner Bonding. William did deep work on understanding the sources of his wounded self’s belief that he was responsible for Lauren’s feelings, and was eventually able to let go of this false belief, as well as learn how to take responsibility for his own feelings when he felt attacked or pulled on by Lauren. As he developed his loving Adult, he was able to take loving care of himself while staying open and caring about Lauren.

Lauren did her own deep Inner Bonding work to finally let go of her long pattern of making others responsible for her feelings. She discovered that her current feelings of abandonment were not because of William at all, but rather because she so often abandoned herself by ignoring her own feelings. She discovered that the moment she made William responsible for her feelings, she felt abandoned because making him responsible for her feelings was an abandonment of herself. As she learned to take loving care of her own feelings, her anger toward William gradually disappeared.

This is the most important work any individual or couple can do to bring about their own happiness and improve all their relationships. Learning to take responsibility for your own feelings and not for another’s feelings is vital for your inner peace, joy and loving relationships.

Digital Advertising Captures Customer Data With New Interactive Technology

With giant retailers like WalMart and others investing heavily in point of purchase digital advertising, we can safely say that digital signs have really arrived as a merchandising and product promotion tool.

The strengths of digital advertising are well known. One of the commonly cited weaknesses is the lack of any effective means to measure not only the traffic walking by a digital sign, but also a customer’s response and level of engagement with the sign.

As interactive digital advertising begins to supplant traditional digital signs, new opportunities are emerging for measuring audience volume and response.

Gauging Customer Response

People of a certain age will likely remember being stopped in a shopping mall by someone with a clipboard looking for participants in a survey about shopping habits. If you recall these moments, you likely also remember being somewhat annoyed or brushing the person off with a polite “too busy” as you pointed to your watch.

Retailers knew then, as they know now, that intruding on shoppers in this way detracts from their shopping experience and can build resentment over the long term.

In lieu of live questioning, some retailers now ask shoppers to participate in online surveys, with links usually provided at the bottom of store receipts. Shoppers are enticed with chances to win gift cards or other prizes. The downfall there, of course, is participation. Just like the clipboard-toting mall surveyor, online surveys are easy for shoppers to ignore.

Into this environment comes digital advertising. Before the addition of interactivity, evidence of the impact digital signs had on shopper behavior was pretty much anecdotal – a certain video loop played at a certain time and, coincidentally or not, sales for the advertised item went up.

Interactive or hybrid digital signs, on the other hand, are tailor-made for tracking customer data. They can tell retailers whether or not customers are responding to the signs and, if they are, what triggered their response.

How Digital Advertising Tracks Customer Behavior

To demonstrate how digital advertising systems can track customer data, let’s look at three methods of interactivity:

• Indirect interaction. This interaction is not initiated by the customer. It usually involves some kind of motion sensor that triggers content to change when a customer stops near the sign and, in theory, takes a closer look. The digital advertising system can capture data about what was playing when the customer stopped so the retailer knows what kind of content is most effective.

• Touch screen. This interaction is initiated by the customer and, as such, is more powerful as a research tool. The customer is attracted to a digital sign and given options to touch the screen for sales and promotional information, to print a coupon, to check product availability and so on. The software that runs the digital advertising system can track what was playing when the customer touched the screen and which selections the customer made to see which options engaged the customer most. Tracking time of day against this data paints a picture of what kind of shoppers are in the store at various day parts, so advertising can be better targeted to them.

• Next generation. This option involves the use of cell phones and PDAs. Cell phones are part of the so-called “next gen” in digital advertising. A call to action is displayed on the signs, prompting viewers to text in to receive a coupon or enter a contest. As described in a 2006 article on the Media in Canada Website, this method is akin to tracking the click-through rate on a Website ad because it tells the retailer exactly how many responses there were for each call to action.

With interactive technologies capturing the kind of data that advertisers and marketers want to see, digital advertising – already gaining popularity as a marketing tool - is poised to become an even stronger presence in today’s retail landscape.

Don’t Follow the Hard Way in MLM

Are you one of those distributors that follow the hard way to build their home based business in MLM? Do you practice the traditional recruiting methods as they are passed down to you from the company and your sponsor? Well, then you are not the only one as there are countless other that insist on following a bad marketing practice.

There are many distributors in MLM companies that even today are trying to tap into their warm market in order to get referrals for their network marketing opportunity. Of course it’s not their fault, as many companies promote this practice to their members and their upline insists on that as never learned another way to do prospecting. It’s like the blind man leading the blind. They learned a method and whether it works or gets them any results they pass it down to those few unfortunate that happened to recruit more out of lack than skill.

Of course, that method of going through your friends and relatives, in order to build your downline in your MLM opportunity, it only works for a few distributors that have the people skills and can convince their audience to do whatever they want. For the rest of the members that are trying to build their home business in that multilevel marketing company, it never works and sometimes it can destroy friendships or alienate you from those you know. It is totally irrational to risk losing your friends trying a recruiting method that is proven that it never works for the majority.

One of the things that traps new distributors in this practice is the seemingly easiness to work your network marketing business that way. No new skills are required, no investment, no work, and you don’t need to learn anything new at all, just go and talk to them. But as you understand, in today’s world that’s not a serious way to build an MLM business, nor any business at all. Long have gone the days when you could talk to a few people about your multilevel marketing opportunity and have some sign up immediately. Today things have changed. We live in a totally different world and if a distributor wants to succeed in this new environment it has to change as well.

Today there are great alternatives that someone can use in order to recruit new members and acquire new customers for his network marketing products. Prospecting methods that really do work and can help someone build a big downline and start making an income. And no, they are not harder than the traditional method that brought a bad name to the multilevel marketing industry. Actually it’s much more harder to go after your friends and relatives, face rejection from people you know, and destroy your good relationship with them.

When you consider all this, it seems much more easier the alternatives like using the Internet for advertising, promotion, and making sales. And you don’t need to rely on online MLM exclusively. There are also offline methods for advertising your opportunity like making use of the print media, like newspapers or magazines. And while you need to have some knowledge on how to do those things, trust me, it’s a lot easier and you carry less emotional burden than going through your warm market.

So stop wasting your time on chasing friends and relatives and embark on the new prospecting and recruiting methods that can make the difference to your network marketing home business. Your time is very precious to waste it on things that don’t give you any results.
