The life of IT staff in the Education sector is so often focused on squeezing every last drop of life out of every hardware and software project. You need to run lean and mean, and simply can’t afford indulgences or risky ventures. However, the challenges you face are no different than the corporations you pass by on the way to work every day.
A recent study at the Trinity School in New York City exposed the overwhelming amount of data that the typical institution has to manage. Trinity has seen staggering increases in data as they have moved to offer 24/7 online access to information for their students and teachers. Schools are simply no longer 9-5 operations. Implementing an automatic defragmentation solution saved the school significant expenses on new hardware and freed up IT to focus on progressive technology projects.
The demands at Trinity School are likely similar to what your IT team is challenged with; leveraging what you have to accommodate every increasing demands.
If a PC could run in production for 5 to 7 years, that will offer tremendous flexibility to the IT budget. After all, the users are running the typical office apps, and they ran fine on those new PCs several years ago. Unless there is a new critical program that requires quad core CPUs and 3GB of RAM, those older PCs are capable of getting the job done.
The only problem with PCs that have been in production for a while is they will be more prone to problems that require Help Desk involvement, i.e. maintenance and repair.
Windows IT Pro published an in-depth study that showed just how much impact fragmentation has on the typical productivity apps and PC use. The longer a PC is in use the more severe accumulation of fragmentation your users, and ultimately you, have to deal with.
Looking at the results, teachers, students and administrative staff that expect a Word document to load quickly can wait as long as 50.9 seconds. That’s a long time to stare at an hourglass, and is the kind of performance impact that often leads to a Help Desk call. Automatic defragmentation keeps file access optimized, so those users get consistent peak performance, lessening demands for “faster computers” as their answer for their performance problems.
Fragmentation affects the servers just as much as the PCs, if not more so. Servers host data that multiple users, maybe hundreds, need access to. The hardware is more powerful, but the demands are far greater.
Fragmentation is a file system consideration. NTFS sees a fragmented file and issues extra I/Os to retrieve the data.
As an example that every school or university has to deal with, increases in retained data are translating to ever increasing backup time requirements. The problem is that as backup programs have to read files, when fragmentation is involved, it adds extra time to the process. IT staff have used Disk Management Software to shrink back up times from 16 hours to less than 4 hours.

Recent data security and retention regulatory requirements have kept healthcare IT staff busy for the past few years. With Google, Revolution Health, and Microsoft moving to expand healthcare/medical search facilities, SOA initiatives related to information sharing and accessibility are being added to the never shrinking To-Do list of those same IT departments. The future of healthcare is demanding that while employees may or may not be working around the clock, information certainly will have to be.
With new technology comes a new competitive landscape, molded around information management. This new market requires reliable infrastructures on which to build patient or B2B portals. IT is playing an increasingly more vital role in the success of healthcare and life sciences organizations. The race is on.
Just like a building requires a solid and stable foundation, so do SOA and modern IT initiatives. Just keeping the PCs and Servers running can no longer be the primary responsibility. IT needs to minimize or eliminate the time spent on maintenance operations. That’s not to say that maintenance can be eliminated, just that it has to be done efficiently and invisibly.
It’s fairly well known that defragmented files mean faster file writes and retrievals. However, file fragmentation, if not handled, will build up to the point that reliability is jeopardized. A solid and stable system foundation demands efficiencies from the slowest part of the computer – the disk subsystem. Slow and or unreliable systems at the core will trickle up to applications that drive the business and jeopardize the viability of information flow and accessibility.
Fragmentation can relentlessly extend load times for large documents, such as from a medical imaging device, which can easily exceed a gigabyte. When a doctor or scientist attempting to access patient records or lab results is staring at an hourglass, vital contributors to business productivity and profitability are negatively affected.
Fragmentation affects the servers just as much as the PCs, if not more so. Servers host data that multiple users, maybe hundreds, need access to. The hardware is more powerful, but the demands are far greater. Waiting for data is bad enough when the end user is staring at an hourglass, but it’s even worse if that employee is engaged with a patient, because now the patient has to wait as well.
Automatic defrag keeps file access optimized, so those users get consistent peak performance, and patients/customers get the rapid service they expect. With such growing competition in the healthcare and life sciences industry, quality of service is a major competitive advantage.
Hospitals never close their doors, but even for outpatient facilities, the days of 9-5 are fading. Patients and their physicians demand access to medical records 24 / 7 / 365. And when those users/patients log in they are accessing data through web portals on company servers.
Michael Materie, Director of Product Management at a renowned disk management software company noted an interesting phenomenon. “Patients are starting to expect access to their medical information any time – day or night. And, healthcare professional have the same demands of their suppliers. Off-hours are becoming a thing of the past. We understand that there is no window of time that can be relegated to computer maintenance activities like defragmentation.”

In the last article, we talked about the terrible state of the economy and how we could save money using the Internet. In this article I want to give you more info on saving money on your everyday utilities. You’re probably wondering where else can he help us save cash on.
Usually, if you’re on the Internet that means you have cable TV that you view daily. This means that you are probably paying at least $130 or more per month for the privilege of using cable TV and Internet. Some of you may have digital phone service that is included in that price.
Like I said in the last article, digital phone service will save you a lot of money. Now we have an opportunity to save you even more money. Let’s visit through this next opportunity step by step.
With your cable system, you probably have high speed Internet. You also decided that you wanted to load it up with the fastest high-speed cable you could get. Then you approached your cable TV provider and said, “I want all these packages”. You got DVR, HBO and some of the other premium channels.
So, with your bundled service of high-speed Internet, cable TV and digital phone service, you’re paying in excess of $130. I know people that are paying $160 or more for their bundled package.
I was able to make significant changes to my monthly bill so that my TV, Internet and phone bill are cheaper. I can hear it now, you’re saying, “how did he do that?”
Okay, here we go. To keep this short, I’ll give you the brief version of what I did.
First, I got rid of my cable TV and went to satellite TV. Number two, I got rid of cable for the Internet and went with DSL high-speed. So, with that combination, I was able to move from $160 per month to less than $100 per month. I had already switched to digital phone service so that was included.
I did add one new super item that cost me about six dollars more per month. I added a digital video telephone and boy am I glad I did that. Yes, the Internet is a little slower due to DSL but I don’t miss it. Who needs all that speed? I would rather have a faster computer.
I cannot express how important it is in this current economic climate to try and save money where ever you can. If you decide that DSL or Satellite TV are not for you then maybe you should ask the millions that are currently using either or both.
The only thing I would caution you on is that you watch and keep in mind that these two services require a contract period of two years normally but if something should occur during that contract period they will try to begin that two year contract over at that point in time. So if you are aware, it is very difficult for you to get taken advantage of.
I’m not going to discuss the digital video telephone in this article except to tell you I love having my video. So, if you are anxious to see about it or to learn more about the digital video phone, you will just have to wait for my next article or maybe you can get a sneak peek by clicking on a link in the author’s box below. See you next time.

I guess it was only a matter of time before someone came up with a good watch that pays videos. We have been seeing them for years in cartoons and sci-fi movies but now they are here! With the huge success of Ipod’s and various other pda’s in recent years comes watches that allow users to store and watch videos. The MP3 and MP4 watches have been on store shelves for a few years now but their popularity isn’t very strong.
The video watches have the capability of playing MP3 AND MP4’s in addition to video formats. I think the video watches will be more popular than music watches ever were. They are already making a big impact on the Chinese market particularly amongst the youth. Just as with the case of camera phones, the Chinese are always the first to get new technologies. It’s only a mater of time before video watches spread to the rest of the world.
Video watches work the same way as other portable multimedia devices work. The watch is connected to your computer using a USB port contained on the watch and files are transferred onto it. In order for everything to work properly, you will need the watch itself, the accompanying software, and earphones. Models of video watches range from one gigabyte to eight gigabytes of memory depending on the brand.
Video formats also vary but the common formats should be supported in any case. Formats such as AVI, MP4, WMV, ASF, MPG, MPEG, DAT, RM and MOV are widely utilized for multimedia. Optional features may include AM/FAM radio, voice recording, picture storage and display, Bluetooth headset and text functions. It may be redundant to mention but every model I have reviewed thus far of video watches are in color only.
Built in battery chargers, various operating system compliancy, hours of playback time, waterproof and similar features appear to be common for all video watch models. To my surprise video watches are very inexpensive. I was able to find several all priced for under one hundred dollars. This may be a good alternative to Apple’s I-Pod for the people who want to get a portable media device.
Watches that play video will display the video on the watches face itself. The audio is sent through to the connecting earphones so you can hear what is being played. Some models may include built in speakers that will allow you to hear without the earphones on. Since the video is watch size, you can expect screen display to be smaller than two inches. From what I’ve seen listed online, the average screen size is only 1.6 inches. Nevertheless, I’m sure someone sitting on a long plane trip won’t mind that. As long as the can watch something that will keep them busy and take their mind’s off of the flight. From my perspective a video watch is perfect for travel.
In conclusion, I don’t think everyone will run out and get a watch that plays video but I do think there is room for it on the market. As this technology begins to develop and spread, you will begin to see the screens become larger and new features added that go beyond both the watch and video realm. In the meantime video watches come fully equipped with everything you could ask for in a video player.

Many people enjoy personalized objects and gifts including photo watches. Photo watches are considered novelty watches that are suitable for different occasions. Photo watches can be personalized with personal photos that are displayed on the watch face. Although the photo watch is considered novelty, it can be manufactured using fine materials and accurate watch movements.
Generally, the best photos for a photo watch are close ups of the subject. A close up photo should be used because the space on the watch face is small. If a person or pet’s picture is to be used, a photo which shows only the face and uppermost shoulders would be an appropriate choice. If a person’s face is small in the photo and the photo has to be enlarged to fit the watch face better, the picture may lose details or become blurry.
The appearance of the photo should have enough contrast so that any facial or other small features are not lost in the rest of the photo. When the photo is placed on the watch face, the hands and face numbers are placed over the picture. The placement of the hands and numbers should be considered so that a photo’s best features are not lost beneath these watch features. Up to two faces are best on a watch face photo since too many photos may not be recognizable after the hands and face numbers are placed on the watch face.
People will find that many photos are suitable for placement on a watch face. It can be hard to pick a favorite photo in some cases. Favorite subjects include family members, pets, special places, objects and people. Parents can buy a picture watch for their children, parents, friends or each other to commemorate a special relationship.
Pet owners, children included, will enjoy wearing a watch with their favorite pet’s face on it. Instead of a photo, the customizable picture watches can be made with a company logo on the watch face. This enables a company to give gifts that are branded with their logo. The photo or picture watch is versatile when it comes to adding a favorite picture or business logo.
There are many photo watches available that can suit any style or color desired. It is possible to find a quality photo watch to suit different budgets. Photo watches are created with different styles such as formal, casual, sporty and teen. Photo watches are available for men, women and children. Photo watches may be created with a metal or plastic casing and the ability to use different materials in their construction adds to their range in prices.
Photo watches make a great surprise gift for someone else or a buyer can buy the photo watch as a special keepsake gift for him or herself. The photo watch can make a touching gift for the recipient when the personal photo on the watch face is chosen for its meaning to the wearer. Photo watches have many fans because of their versatility as a jewelry item.

Nowadays we have many benefits to take on the difficulties of life cheerfully and tactfully. Earlier our elders did not have many equipments and even if the equipments were available in the market then they were too expensive and beyond the reach of the common man. But today we have so many easily available equipments so that we can make use of them in our daily routines. Some of the latest equipments are the hidden cameras, the spy cameras, the nanny cameras, the CID cameras, the CMOS cameras, the CCD cameras and the CCTV cameras.
These days many people have started using these cameras in their homes and in their offices but those who have not yet started using them can get the thorough information about the cameras on the website while surfing through the internet. There are varieties of cameras all of different sizes and shapes but all are featured with exceptional advantages. The tiniest camera also has the capability to capture the images with utter clarity. Shopping online is very simple these days. We only have to select our product, place an order for it and then it will be shipped to our address directly without any postponement.
My sister Rosita was constantly complaining about the thefts in her cosmetic shop. All her original and expensive cosmetics were exchanged and the duplicate and inexpensive cosmetics of the same brand were kept there. She came to know about this matter when her customers started complaining that they are getting rashes on their face using the cosmetics bought from her shop. A police complaint was given against her that she was selling duplicate cosmetics. My sister was very much annoyed and did not know what to do. We discussed the matter with the higher authorities of the police department and we wanted time and support from them so that we could prove my sister’s innocence. After many requests they gave us a week’s time and we had to prove our innocence within this period only. I requested my sister to leave all the matter on me and that she should come to the shop for a few days.
She readily agreed and I immediately placed an order for the Teddy bear spy camera which was shipped to my house within three days. I kept the Teddy bear in my sister’s shop on the shelf where all the cosmetics were arranged. The camera was switched on day and night all the proceedings of each and every individual were being captured in it. As usual the thief started its work during the lunch time when all the other employees were off for lunch. Even I was not in the shop and purposely left the shop so that the thief could do the mischief. Finally all the actions of the thief were captured with the help of the Teddy bear spy camera which was switched on before I left the shop and the culprit was nabbed and handed over to the police with complete evidence and my sister thanked me for my consciousness and knowledge of the spy cameras which helped us during our critical phase of life.

Notebook batteries are designed specifically for different notebooks brand as well as models. Today notebooks are powered by lithium ion batteries. Lithium ion batteries are lighter, have a better power-to-weight ratio, can hold a charge longer, have a longer usable life, and do not have the memory effect to fail prematurely.
Lithium ion batteries are also inexpensive to manufacture as compared to the earlier generation of nickel metal hydride batteries. The only shortcoming about lithium ion batteries is as they contain lithium salt dissolved in a highly flammable solvent, there are chances of overhead which can result in short-circuits or even blow up in flames.
It is a common fact that all notebook batteries have provision for limited time of power supply. A good bargain is to check the battery power while buying a notebook. Here is one instant tip to optimize the battery settings in accordance with the energy saving mode of your notebook. These settings will put the hard disk into sleep mode whenever the workload is less and it will reduce the notebook microprocessor performance in order to maximize its battery life.
From the system preferences mode of your notebook, select view menu, then choose energy saver option from view menu. Right click on show details option and choose battery power from the pop-up menu. Finally choose longest battery life from the energy settings pop-up menu.
Tips to optimise your notebook batteries are described in the following:
It is better to keep your notebook on standby mode when not in use for certain amount of time. Standby mode ensures all current info is saved in RAM with minimum consumption of battery power.
It is a good investment to add more memory to your notebook as it saves battery power by reducing Windows’ dependence on the virtual memory swap file on your hard disk.
Try to set the screen brightness of the LCD panel of your notebook to the lowest comfortable level as very bright screen tends to consume more power from your battery.
Charge your notebook battery frequently with a battery charger or AC adapter. It is very important to clean your battery’s metal contacts every couple of months to make it dust free. You can use a cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol to clean your notebook battery.
Turn of the unused features and technologies of your notebook which are not frequently usable. For example, it is better to eject the CD or DVD when you are not using them as the optical drive has the tendency of reading CD or DVD it finds very often and this process consume extra battery power.
Similarly it is better to get rid of the outer peripherals such as printers or digital cameras as they can still draw power from your notebook battery even when they are not used.
Turning off or at least disabling the PC Cards, FireWire devices and USB when not in use also saves battery power. In fact, disabling modem, network cards and USB ports consumes less battery power even when they are on. These devices are easily disabled in device manager.
To save power, it is good idea to turn off the AirPort, Wi-Fi, IR radios and Bluetooth option when it is not required to use. Virus scan should be set only during the time you are usually plugged in as full-disk virus check by the hard drive and CPU consumes additional power from battery.
Opt for the power console applet to customize the power profiles on your notebook. Do not worry in case your notebook does not have power console applet option for most of the operating systems (starting from windows 98) have Power Options utility in Control Panel.
You can use power saver option of your operating system to adjust the CPU processing power. Optimum CPU processes consume additional battery power and hence should be avoided if not required. Stop the auto start applications on your notebook, so that your notebook`s CPU can be stopped from doing unnecessary work.
With the above mentioned handy tips, you can truly increase the battery performance of your notebook.

Pen Drives, the high capacity movable storage device of the computer, is not just a boon for the IT and other business sectors, but it has been proved to be the most dangerous device to harm any organisation. While data security and confidentiality matter the most in any government and private organisation, a pen drive is the most useful device for the corporate spies or hackers to take data easily and misuse it.
Among the threats for an organisation associated with a pen drive, the most important is transmission of viruses. As most of the antivirus software fail to detect the viruses in a pen drive or safeguard the computer, a computer can be easily infected by a virus transmitted through pen drive. This portable device can be responsible for data loss and data theft. In corporate sectors, many employees have found with taking malicious software, video clips, computer games, MP3 files, pornography pictures and other inappropriate files violating corporate rules.
However, restricting a pen drive in a corporate environment is next to impossible. They are too small in size to be carried stealthily and also they are getting cheaper everyday. These days, the pen drives are available that can not be identified by a metal detectors as well. Hence, the security threats involved with a pen drive is hard to combat with. However, some measures can be chosen to deal with the serious issue.
Educating the user:
It is hard to stop the gadget junkies from using pen drives as it has become the `must-have` for them. And sometimes, pen drives becomes essential for any work progress. But it is possible for the office authorities to educate the users on the use of pen drive while taking data to their home out of the office or bringing any data to the office.
Lock desktop security:
Many companies are adopting the security policy of locking the computer automatically when not in use for a few minutes. Though it is a perfect alternative, using a pen drive or misuse of data are possible when the computer is unattended by someone. The interval of locking can be reduced in a high risk environment. In a workstation with access to sensitive data the lock desktop can prevent misuse of pen drive to a large extent.
Rigorous anti-virus policies:
The company or the corporate authorities should configure antivirus software to scan and detect every attached drive and removable media. The users of every interface should be trained to scan the files before opening them. This can reduce the effect of the virus in case it is transmitted through a pen drive.
Restriction of USB ports:
In the corporate environment or any other place the USB ports of the desktop computers can be made disabled to prevent the use of pen drive by the outsiders. In place of the USB port, the legacy port can be used for using the peripherals. Even software can be used to restrict the access of end user to the I/O devices and many other plugs and play devices.
Use of secure devices:
Companies should take care of issuing only secure devices to the employees and also these devices should be approved to purchase. The users having potential access to sensitive data should be allowed the devices with security features and they should be trained to use all the security features.
Educating the security personnel:
The security personnel of a company must know how a pen drive looks like and what dangers it can cause if it is with a miscreant. Any unauthorised person in the company premises with a pen drive should not be ignored. Rather, legal steps can be taken to seize the device.
It is barely possible to work in any corporate environment without the help of a pen drive. But looking at the scenario, where the large business sectors are facing potential threats due to pen drives everyday, some of the above security measures can be adapted to, at least, reduce the hazards of misusing pen drives.
